| Marc Friedland I'm a delegate for Hillary Clinton to the Democratic National Convention in Denver. It's an interesting and historic position to be in. I was elected as a delegate to represent those who voted for Hillary in the primary in my district and I promised them I would support her to the end. Even though Hillary has suspended her campaign and offered her support to get Obama elected in November, I intend to carry out that promise. This is my first convention and actually my first involvement in party politics. I'm also a volunteer for Harry Taylor for congress in the NC 9th district. Harry is trying to unseat Sue Myrick, a real Bush loyalist. People in Charlotte will know me from my business, Talley's Green Grocery. I support the work of The Denver Group and the I Own My Vote pledge, but these efforts will be meaningless unless we can keep the delegates together. The party rules allow delegates to vote for anyone. They are supposed to vote for the candidate they were pledged to, but the convention rules don't force them to do that. So, even if we have an open convention, if Hillary's delegates are not given the information they need to support her, many of their votes will go to Obama. If the Democratic Party wants the votes of Hillary's supporters in November, they will have to show respect for the 18 million who voted for Hillary in the primaries. This is the kind of unity I want to see in the Democratic Party, a unity where we respect each others views, even if we don't always agree. Hillary's delegates represent those 18 million voters and we are going to Denver to see that they get the respect they deserve. -- Marc Friedland Charlotte, NC Hillary Clinton Delegate North Carolina District 9 Democratic National Convention 2008 see blog posting |
